[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok embarks on his first overseas business trip since taking office to deliver a keynote speech at the UN Disaster Risk Reduction Conference and promote the bid to host the 2025 APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Summit.
Incheon City announced that Mayor Yoo plans to visit Singapore, Sydney, and Brisbane, Australia, from the 15th to the 22nd for a 7-night, 8-day schedule.
This overseas trip was made possible after the UNDRR (United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction), an international disaster-related organization, officially invited the Incheon mayor as a keynote speaker to the '9th Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR)' held this year in Brisbane, Australia.
Mayor Yoo will meet with the UNDRR Special Representative and attend the ministerial conference plenary session to deliver a keynote speech under the theme "Disaster-Resilient City Incheon," promoting Incheon's urban safety on the international stage.
Earlier, Incheon was recognized for fulfilling its obligations as a 'UNDRR Role Model' city and its capabilities in promoting resilience hubs, including infectious disease prevention and management. In November last year, it was selected as the first city in Asia and the sixth worldwide to be certified as a 'UNDRR Resilience Hub City.'
Since 2010, UNDRR has certified cities committed to addressing disasters and climate change among those participating in the 'Making Cities Resilient (MCR) Campaign,' which aims to build cities resilient to climate change and disasters.
Mayor Yoo also plans to visit the APEC Secretariat in Singapore to promote the bid for the '2025 APEC Summit.'
Leveraging his extensive experience hosting international events such as the 17th Incheon Asian Games in 2014 and the 6th OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) World Forum in 2018, as well as Incheon's large-scale international conference infrastructure and physical resources like the Songdo International Business District, Incheon International Airport, and Incheon Free Economic Zone, Mayor Yoo will emphasize that Incheon is the optimal location for the APEC Summit.
The APEC Summit is an annual meeting of leaders from 21 Asia-Pacific countries. After being held in Busan in 2005, it is set to be hosted domestically again for the first time in 20 years. Currently, Incheon, Busan, Jeju, Daejeon, and Gyeongbuk Gyeongju have expressed their intention to bid.

An Incheon city official stated, "Mayor Yoo will use this overseas trip as an opportunity to showcase Incheon's safety on the international stage and actively promote it as the best city for the 2025 APEC Summit. Additionally, by visiting Singapore, a global financial hub, to observe excellent policy sites and urban regeneration facilities, he plans to concretize the 'Incheon's Vision for Development as a Top-tier Global City,' a pledge of the 8th local government administration."
