[Box Office] Audiences Wanting to Laugh Now... 'Yuksa-o' Stands Tall as Weekend No.1
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] The weekend box office landscape is intriguing. The mid-sized comedy film 'Yuksao' has overtaken director Lee Jung-jae's 'Hunt' to claim the top spot in its second week of release.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticket sales network, over the three days of last weekend (2nd to 4th), 'Yuksao' (directed by Park Gyutae) attracted 406,990 viewers, securing first place at the box office. Since its release on the 24th of last month, it has recorded a cumulative audience of 1,134,780.
The comedy film 'Yuksao', starring actors Go Kyung-pyo and Lee Yi-kyung, had a production budget of 5 to 6 billion KRW, with a break-even point around 1.65 million viewers. Although modest in scale, the film's humor has generated word-of-mouth, steadily drawing audiences. Additionally, with no significant new releases ahead of Chuseok and few new films scheduled for the holiday period, attention is focused on what choices audiences will make.
Lee Jung-jae and Jung Woo-sung's 'Hunt' drew 203,506 viewers, placing second. Since its release on the 10th of last month, a total of 4,116,629 people have seen the film.
'Hansan: Rising Dragon' (directed by Kim Han-min), which depicts Admiral Yi Sun-sin's Battle of Hansan, attracted 76,999 viewers, ranking third. The film, released on July 27, has accumulated 7,159,664 viewers.
Fourth place went to 'Top Gun: Maverick', fifth to 'Limit', released on the 31st of last month, and sixth to Jordan Peele's 'Nope'. 'Semantic Error: The Movie', which gained popularity on the online streaming service Watcha and was adapted into a theatrical version released on the 31st of last month, entered the charts at ninth place.
