[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Kyung-jun] Candidate for Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok stated on the 4th that he will "investigate and handle the allegations surrounding Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, fairly based solely on evidence and legal principles."
In his written response submitted to the National Assembly for the confirmation hearing, regarding the question that there are criticisms that the search and seizure of former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk, Lee Jae-myung, and Lee’s spouse’s cases were excessive, he replied, "I understand that the investigation, including search and seizure, was conducted based on warrants lawfully issued by judges and following due legal procedures."
When asked whether, as Prosecutor General, he would order the start of an investigation if there were criminal allegations against the incumbent president or the president’s spouse and relatives, he said, "It is difficult to answer based on hypothetical situations, but I will strive to properly and uprightly carry out what must be done solely according to law and principles."
Regarding investigations into allegations related to the Moon Jae-in administration, such as the nuclear phase-out policy and repatriation cases, he emphasized, "I will investigate and dispose of these matters fairly based solely on evidence and legal principles, without any political considerations."
On being classified as part of the ‘Yoon Seok-youl faction,’ the candidate stated, "I have no private ties with the president and only have professional relations," adding, "I believe that concepts like ‘faction’ do not exist in public institutions and are undesirable."
Regarding allegations surrounding First Lady Kim Kun-hee, including preferential treatment in the presidential residence construction, unofficial aides, and the Deutsche Motors stock manipulation case, he said, "The Prosecutor General’s authority to direct investigations was excluded, so I have not been briefed on the progress of the investigations. I do not know the specific details, so it is difficult to respond."
