Gangjin-gun, All-Out Effort to Secure Budget for Shellfish Damage
Visited the National Assembly and Ministry of Environment to Request Cooperation for Damage Compensation
[Gangjin=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-su] Gangjin County is making every effort and moving quickly to secure a budget immediately after the final service results on shellfish decline damage in Gangjin Bay were completed on August 26.
Deputy County Mayor Yu Mi-ja and officials from the Marine and Forestry Department visited the National Assembly and the Ministry of Environment consecutively on the 30th and 31st of last month to meet with relevant personnel to seek cooperation for securing national funds for service costs related to shellfish damage compensation.
At the National Assembly, they met with local district lawmaker Kim Seung-nam, Environment and Labor Committee Chairman Jeon Hae-cheol, Environment and Labor Committee members No Woong-rae and Im Eui-ja, and National Assembly Budget Committee member Seo Jeong-suk. They explained the current situation faced by fishermen and the future direction of Gangjin County’s initiatives, forming a deep consensus and receiving promises of active support.
Deputy County Mayor Yu Mi-ja said, “Since securing service costs for damage compensation calculation is a prerequisite, we will closely cooperate with the National Assembly’s Environment and Labor Committee and Budget Committee to ensure the budget is reflected in this regular National Assembly session. We will fully support the role of securing the budget at the National Assembly level by providing necessary materials.” She added, “The county will also promptly proceed with administrative procedures, including immediately reactivating the working-level consultative body that was formed and operated in 2011.”
Additionally, they visited the Water Resources Policy Division of the Ministry of Environment to request active cooperation with the Korea Water Resources Corporation at the Ministry level so that follow-up measures based on the recent service results can be implemented promptly.
County Mayor Kang Jin-won said, “Despite the passive participation of the Korea Water Resources Corporation five years ago, the county’s active involvement has led to the promotion of the shellfish damage compensation service to this point. We will focus all administrative power to secure service costs for damage compensation decisions in a timely manner and ensure smooth completion of compensation.”
