[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Kyung-jun] A public institution official under Busan City was brought to trial for receiving several hundred million won from an executive of a major construction company under the pretext of providing convenience during the bidding process for a sewer pipeline maintenance project worth hundreds of billions of won.
The Anti-Corruption Investigation Division 2 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Young-chul) announced on the 30th that A (55), former head of the Busan Public Investment Management Center at the Busan Research Institute, was arrested and indicted on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (bribery).
A is accused of receiving 170 million won in four installments from B, an executive director at Lotte Construction, in exchange for providing convenience during the 2015 bidding process while in charge of selecting companies participating in the approximately 80 billion won "Busan City Sewer Pipeline Maintenance Lease-type Private Investment Project" (BTL).
Since 2011, Busan City has conducted sewer pipeline maintenance projects eight times throughout the city, and the Busan Public Investment Management Center, where A worked, was responsible for selecting participating companies and conducting preliminary feasibility studies on behalf of the city.
The consortium including Lotte Construction won the project rights four times, and in 2013 and 2015, it was also selected as a co-lead company with Kumho Construction.
