Kwon Seong-dong: "Party Confusion Due to Expressed Differences... Must Take the General Assembly Decision Seriously"
"All Except One Support the Launch of the Emergency Committee"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] On the 30th, it was pointed out that internal confusion within the party is intensifying as differing opinions have emerged despite Floor Leader Kwon Seong-dong's resolution on the 27th through a party members' meeting to launch a new Emergency Response Committee.
At the members' meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Floor Leader Kwon said, "A return to the Supreme Council system is impossible, and above all, the new Emergency Response Committee is something we ourselves have resolved."
He added, "It is the party's duty to abide by one's own resolutions," and said, "We must take the decision of the members' meeting seriously ourselves. I ask the members to consider the most realistic alternatives and swift methods." This was a dismissal of internal dissent opposing the launch of the new Emergency Response Committee, emphasizing that "the decision of the members' meeting must be upheld."
He also reminded that the cause of the existing Emergency Response Committee's launch was triggered by the disciplinary action of the Ethics Committee against former party leader Lee Jun-seok. He stated, "Where did the party's crisis begin? It is true that it was triggered by the Ethics Committee's disciplinary action regarding the attempt to cover up allegations of sexual bribery against former leader Lee," and emphasized, "Immediately after the party leader's disciplinary action, the Party Planning and Coordination Office defined the situation as the party leader's accident according to the party's constitution and regulations, and the members here also ratified this through the members' meeting."
He continued, "However, at the end of July, there was a situation where Supreme Council members resigned one after another, and dozens of party-affiliated lawmakers submitted a petition demanding an immediate transition to the Emergency Response Committee. Subsequently, another members' meeting was held to ask the will of the party-affiliated lawmakers and decided on the transition to the Emergency Response Committee system," adding, "To my recollection, except for one person, all supported the launch of the Emergency Response Committee."
Floor Leader Kwon said, "However, through this provisional injunction decision, we need to meticulously revise the current party constitution and regulations to eliminate grounds for future controversies and prevent such confusion from recurring," and added, "If a resolution made by the members' meeting is immediately denied, the current crisis will inevitably continue."
