Gwangju Seo-gu Holds Interim Report Meeting on Research Project for Creating an Age-Friendly City

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kim Yi-gang) announced on the 26th that it held the appointment ceremony for the Age-Friendly City Creation Committee and the interim report meeting for the age-friendly city creation research project on the 25th.

An "age-friendly city" refers to a city that provides opportunities to improve the quality of life for the elderly and offers an environment where they can continue to live in the community, allowing all generations, including the elderly, to live comfortably without inconvenience.

The report meeting was attended by 14 committee members, including Vice Mayor Kwak Hyun-mi, the chairperson of the Age-Friendly City Creation Committee, and the Korea Regional Welfare Academy (Director Heo Suk-min), which was in charge of the research project, gave an interim report on the research.

In April, the research firm conducted a survey of 800 elderly people to derive various policies aimed at rejoining the WHO Age-Friendly Cities network.

Through the survey, they not only considered continuity with the first basic plan for the age-friendly city in 2019 but also analyzed the living conditions of the elderly by 18 neighborhoods and conducted a detailed investigation of the community environment, thereby laying the foundation for setting guidelines for the second basic plan for the age-friendly city.

A Seo-gu official said, "Through this research project, we will produce substantial results and establish a blueprint for creating an age-friendly city."

Meanwhile, Seo-gu joined the WHO Age-Friendly Cities International Network as the second member in Gwangju Metropolitan City and the 12th among local governments nationwide on November 10, 2019. After gathering opinions from this interim report meeting, Seo-gu plans to evaluate the three-year (2019?2021) implementation of the age-friendly city initiative and prepare a five-year plan by indicators before applying for re-certification.
