Ulsan Artists Invited Performance, Food Trucks & Flea Market Provided
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] A unique cultural space where people can acquire and experience humanities information and relax, as well as study, is being established on the university campus.
At Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), this new and hot place called ‘UNIPLEX’ is opening. A variety of opening events will be held on September 2nd and 3rd in this space that anyone, not just students, can enjoy.
UNIST will hold the opening ceremony of the complex cultural space, UNIPLEX, at the Academic Information Center starting from 4:30 PM on September 2nd.
UNIPLEX is a complex cultural space remodeled from the first floor of the existing Academic Information Center. It consists of three main spaces: Jigwan Seoga (humanities space), CALIU (rest area), and an experience space (book curation and collaboration space), where anyone can drop by to attend lectures or hold meetings.
The humanities space ‘Jigwan Seoga’ is an urban space creation project planned by the Platon Academy Foundation in public spaces in Ulsan city and its districts.
Its purpose is to contribute to the happy lives of Ulsan citizens through various humanities programs. The UNIST Jigwan Seoga, which will be the fourth branch in Ulsan city, is themed around ‘Meditation.’
Online and offline lectures related to the theme and non-face-to-face reading meetings are planned, and through book curation, various books will be recommended to provide visitors with a differentiated humanities experience.
The rest area ‘CALIU (CAmpus Life is U),’ jointly branded by Seonbo, Samjin, and HW Company, offers a variety of food and cultural spaces.
Here, lectures and performances on various life-related topics will be held, and product development and sales are also planned. In the future, events targeting Ulsan citizens will be prepared in collaboration with Ulsan city.
Lastly, the experience space’s book curation area will be stocked with over 2,000 books across 10 themes recommended by ‘Choi In-ah Bookstore.’
On the opening day, September 2nd, a lecture by artist Noh Il-hoon, who created the artwork installed on the ceiling of UNIPLEX, and a performance by the UNIST cheering squad (UNIQUE) will take place.
Commemorative gifts will be distributed to 150 attendees of the opening ceremony, and a UNIPLEX SNS hashtag event will be held during the event period.
To participate, post a photo of UNIPLEX on Instagram with the hashtags ‘#유니플렉스, #UNIST복합문화공간, #UNIST학술정보관’. Winners will be selected by drawing and awarded prizes.
From 6 PM on the same day, a ‘Concert with Ulsan Citizens’ will be held. UNIST clubs and Ulsan local artists (fusion gugak, b-boying) will be invited to perform celebratory shows.
Following this, a ‘Long-term Competition (UNISTAR is born)’ will be held with participation from UNIST members and Ulsan citizens. A total of eight teams who passed the preliminaries will advance to the finals and showcase their talents on the opening ceremony stage.
At the lawn plaza beside the Academic Information Center, 30 food trucks and flea market booths will operate until September 3rd.
Local small business owners active in the Ulsan city flea market have been invited to prepare a variety of attractions. Also, the newly created ‘Dulle-gil’ trail around the natural lake Gamakmot will offer visitors campus scenery and relaxation.
UNIST President Lee Yong-hoon said, “The newly reborn UNIST Academic Information Center complex cultural space (UNIPLEX) will be a high-quality cultural space befitting a world-class research university,” adding, “Since it is open to Ulsan citizens, I hope it will establish itself as a ‘landmark of Ulsan’ that the local community can enjoy together.”
UNIPLEX was remodeled over 16 months, covering about 500 pyeong on the first floor of the Academic Information Center, with a total project cost of about 2.7 billion KRW.
