Samsung Unveils '990 PRO' SSD Targeting Gaming Demand with Focus on Speed and Heat Dissipation
Consumer SSD Unveiled with Speed, Power Efficiency, and Stability
Up to 55% Faster and 50% More Power Efficient Compared to Previous Model
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Pyeonghwa] Samsung Electronics, the No. 1 player in the solid-state drive (SSD) market, has introduced a new product targeting the consumer SSD market. It focuses on fast speed and heat dissipation, optimized for high-performance graphic tasks such as gaming.
On the 25th, Samsung Electronics unveiled the consumer SSD '990 PRO.' The 990 PRO is equipped with Samsung Electronics' latest V-NAND technology and a newly designed controller. Compared to previous models, its random write speed has improved by 55%, and read speed by 40%, reaching up to 1400K IOPS and 1550K IOPS respectively. IOPS refers to the number of input/output operations per second. Sequential read and write performance reach up to 7450MB/s and 6900MB/s respectively. The product includes heat control features such as a nickel-coated controller, heat dissipation sheets, and overheating prevention functions. Power efficiency per watt has improved by up to 50% compared to previous models.
The 990 PRO is suitable for environments requiring ultra-fast data processing, such as high-performance graphic games, 4K/8K high-definition video, 3D rendering, and big data analysis. Users can enjoy vivid gaming with high-resolution graphics thanks to fast loading times on the latest game consoles and PCs. For example, loading the map of the game Forspoken, developed by Luminous Productions and set to release next year, takes about one second on the 990 PRO.
Samsung Electronics also introduced the '990 PRO with Heatsink,' which maximizes heat control features. The 990 PRO with Heatsink has heatsinks attached to both the front and back of the product to maximize heat dissipation performance. It also features RGB lighting, allowing users to add their own style to their PCs.
Samsung Electronics plans to release the 990 PRO and 990 PRO with Heatsink in October after unveiling them at Gamescom 2022. The prices for the 990 PRO are $179 (240,000 KRW) for 1TB and $309 (410,000 KRW) for 2TB. The 990 PRO with Heatsink is priced at $199 (270,000 KRW) and $329 (440,000 KRW) respectively. The 4TB model will be released next year.
Lee Gyu-young, Executive Director of the Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics' Memory Business Division, said, "As technological innovations in 4K, 8K content, gaming, and artificial intelligence (AI) continue, the demand for high-performance storage is increasing exponentially. The 990 PRO, with ultra-fast data processing, improved power efficiency, and enhanced reliability, will be the best choice for gamers and professional creators seeking high-performance SSDs."
