[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] In 1988, youths involved in a slush fund investigation operation race boldly through the city.
Yoo Ah-in, the lead actor of the Netflix film Seoul Daejakjeon, introduced the film at a production briefing held on the morning of the 23rd at the Grand Intercontinental Seoul Parnas in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, describing it as a "pleasant, refreshing, and thrilling entertainment movie" and saying, "You will naturally feel and accept the era." Go Kyung-pyo expressed confidence, calling it a "lively movie."
Set to be released on the 26th, Seoul Daejakjeon is a car-chasing action race story that unfolds in 1988 when the Sanggye-dong Supreme Team, dreaming of the American Dream, receives an irresistible offer and is deployed in a VIP slush fund investigation operation. The film is directed by Moon Hyun-sung, who also directed Korea (2012) and The King's Case Note (2017).
The movie is set in Seoul in 1988, a year filled with the hip-hop culture that started in the United States and the excitement of the Olympic festival. Director Moon said, "I wanted to create a hip-hop story set in a time when the bright and dark sides of Korean history coexisted." He added, "Please watch how the era's background and concept blend together."
"Settings such as Seoul's Sanggye-dong, which appear in the film, were as important a background as historical accuracy. We placed key links to naturally connect the newly created fictional story with 1988. It was important to be faithful to the era while designing it attractively. Please see it as realized in the unique color of Seoul Daejakjeon."
The director cited the star-studded casting as the film's strength. He said, "We put as much effort into casting as we did into filming," adding, "It was dazzling to an excessive degree."
Yoo Ah-in, Go Kyung-pyo, Lee Kyu-hyung, Park Ju-hyun, and Ong Seong-wu play the lively roles of the Sanggye-dong Supreme Team's Hole Fam. Yoo Ah-in described the film as a "challenging work" and revealed, "After waiting, I felt that I could do it if I was with the actors." He added, "Challenges may not always succeed, but if achieved, new moments will continue."
Go Kyung-pyo, who appeared in the drama Reply 1988 and once again stars in a contemporary period piece, laughed, saying, "I once lived in 1988 before, but I wanted to live it again in a new way." Lee Kyu-hyung said, "The combination of actors was fresh and fun."
Regarding the urban car chase scenes, Yoo Ah-in recalled, "It was fascinating just to see old cars like the discontinued Pony."
