Encryption Implementation Using Quantum Cryptography Random Numbers
[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] KT announced on the 23rd that it has commercialized a virtual private network (VPN) technology based on quantum cryptography with AhnLab to ensure higher security even in wireless environments such as 5G and LTE.
The quantum cryptography VPN technology commercialized this time was implemented based on patented technology developed by KT Convergence Technology Institute in 2020, and it is significant in that it expanded quantum cryptography security, which was previously used mainly for wired networks, to wireless networks, thereby enhancing security.
In particular, this quantum cryptography VPN encrypts the connection segment between the client and the server, enabling quantum cryptography security regardless of the connection method (wired/wireless). Since the key value used when connecting the client is encrypted using a quantum random number generation method, it offers higher security than general VPNs that generate random numbers by software methods.
KT and AhnLab have collaborated since 2020 to commercialize the quantum cryptography VPN, starting with participation in the government’s Quantum Cryptography Communication Digital New Deal project, and developed a cryptographic module using EYL’s quantum random number generator (QRNG). This cryptographic module obtained the National Intelligence Service’s Cryptographic Module Validation Program (KCMVP) certification in September 2021 and also received the Common Criteria (CC) certification in December 2021.
KT and AhnLab plan to launch a subscription-based quantum cryptography VPN service and will also promote joint marketing in related business areas.
