'Gimhae Gaya Cultural Festival' Defeated by COVID-19 Even on Its 60th Anniversary
Publishing a White Paper Instead of Holding the Event, Aiming for April Next Year
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] The Gaya Cultural Festival in Gimhae City, Gyeongnam, which was canceled for two consecutive years due to the impact of COVID-19, has been completely canceled again this year, marking its 60th anniversary.
According to Gimhae City, the festival was scheduled to be held from April 14 to 17, which corresponds to the 15th day of the 3rd lunar month, the Surouwang Chunhyang Daeje, but it was postponed once to October, the Chuhyang Daeje day on the 15th day of the 9th lunar month, to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The city announced that due to the recent resurgence trend caused by the COVID-19 variant virus, the large-scale population movement for Chuseok, the arrival of the changing seasons, the lifting of social distancing, and decreased immunity due to unvaccinated individuals, concerns about an increase in confirmed cases have grown, leading to the decision to cancel.
The Festival Organizing Committee stated, “Considering criticisms about budget waste for holding the festival in October this year and April next year, as well as demands for a new type of festival suitable for the post-COVID-19 era, we have inevitably decided to cancel.”
The committee plans to publish a white paper that reexamines the 60th anniversary of the festival, separate from the cancellation.

We will not stop at simply canceling the festival but will present a festival with competitiveness and identity worthy of an excellent festival in Gyeongnam Province next April through the publication of the white paper and strengthening the expertise of the organizing committee.”
