Song Gap-seok, Candidate for Min Party Supreme Council Member, Lays Foundation for Dramatic Comeback... Advances to 6th Place
Final Stages of Party Convention Primaries: Strong Performance in Gwangju and Jeonnam
Only 9,442 Votes Behind 3rd Place... 2,065 Votes Ahead of 5th Place
Analysis Suggests Possible Turnaround in Seoul and Gyeonggi on the 27th; Appeals for Su
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Song Gap-seok, the only non-metropolitan candidate among the Democratic Party of Korea's Supreme Council member candidates, has laid the groundwork for a dramatic comeback as the party convention primary approaches its final stage.
After the joint speech event in Daejeon and Sejong on the 14th, Song rose to 7th place by combining the results of the first national public opinion poll and the votes of party members. He then jumped to 6th place in the recent Gwangju-Jeonnam vote, putting him on the verge of entering the top 5.
According to the Democratic Party on the 21st, in Gwangju-Jeonnam, considered the biggest battleground of the August 28 party convention, Song Gap-seok recorded a cumulative vote count of 48,929 and a cumulative vote share of 9.09%, ranking 6th.
The 1st place was candidate Jung Cheong-rae with 26.4%, followed by candidate Ko Min-jung in 2nd place with 23.39%.
Next were candidate Jang Kyung-tae with 10.84%, candidate Seo Young-kyo with 10.84%, candidate Park Chan-dae with 9.47%, candidate Song Gap-seok with 9.09%, candidate Yoon Young-chan with 6.63%, and candidate Ko Young-in with 3.34%, in that order.
Song, the only non-metropolitan and sole Honam candidate, initially ranked last due to relatively low recognition caused by lack of experience on the central stage during the early touring primaries.
After moving up one step to 7th place at the halfway point in Daejeon-Sejong, he succeeded in jumping to 6th place in Gwangju-Jeonnam, continuing the spark of a turnaround.
Looking at the cumulative vote share so far, the difference in votes from 3rd place candidate Jang Kyung-tae is 9,442 votes, with only a 1.75% difference in vote share.
The gap with 5th place (candidate Park Chan-dae), who will be elected as a Supreme Council member, is 2,065 votes, making it highly likely to overturn in the remaining Seoul-Gyeonggi touring primaries.
A representative from Song’s campaign said, “It would have been better if we had secured 5th place in the Gwangju-Jeonnam touring primary to face the Seoul-Gyeonggi primaries, but this result is sufficiently encouraging,” and appealed, “Please support Song, the only non-metropolitan candidate who represents regional public sentiment beyond Honam until the very end.”
