On the 19th, the Ministry of Justice announced, "Since the 10th until the 19th, approximately 700 community service workers have been urgently deployed mainly in the Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, and Honam regions, which suffered severe damage from the heavy rain, to carry out recovery activities."
Community service workers refer to individuals who have committed minor offenses and have been ordered by the court to perform unpaid community service. They are typically assigned to tasks such as graffiti removal, street cleaning, and support for welfare facilities and rural fishing villages.
Regarding the recent flood damage, community service workers were intensively deployed in areas such as Banpo-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul, and Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, where they carried out tasks including building cleaning, removal of soil and debris, and cleaning of home appliances. In rural areas such as Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, and Cheongju, Chungbuk, volunteer activities included repairing collapsed embankments and re-erecting greenhouses that had been knocked down by strong winds.
Minister of Justice Han Donghoon stated, "Many citizens are suffering due to the heavy rain, and the pain of farmers awaiting harvest is also significant. We will focus community service workers on supporting flood damage relief and find ways the Ministry of Justice can help so that affected citizens can quickly return to their daily lives."
