Warm seawater exceeding 28℃... Gyeongnam Province issues high-temperature advisory and warning
Supply of Response Equipment and Immune Enhancers, Issuance of Disaster Countermeasure Orders, etc.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Gyeongsangnam-do announced on the 9th at 2 p.m. that a high water temperature advisory has been issued for all coastal waters in the province, and a high water temperature warning has been issued for Sacheonman and Gangjinman waters.
Gyeongnam Province explained that this is due to the recent continuous heatwave causing coastal water temperatures to rise, reaching or expected to reach 28℃.
According to the province, the Sacheonman and Gangjinman waters, where an advisory was issued on the 6th of last month, have remained at 28℃ or higher for more than three days, resulting in an upgrade to a warning.
Currently, the water temperature distribution in the province shows that the relatively shallow waters of Namhae Gangjinman are around 28℃, while other waters range from approximately 25 to 27.5℃.
To minimize damage from high water temperatures, the province provides real-time water temperature information for key management waters daily to about 690 fishermen through the red tide and abnormal water temperature band, a real-time social media communication channel operated by the province. The province and city/county offices are also operating emergency response situation rooms for high water temperatures.
A provincial official stated, “In June, we established a comprehensive high water temperature countermeasure plan and supplied fishermen with high water temperature response equipment worth about 1.125 billion KRW, including oxygen generators, and 29 tons of immune boosters to strengthen the safety infrastructure of fish farms.” He added, “We also quickly completed proactive measures such as guiding subscription to special high water temperature insurance.”
He continued, “We promptly issued disaster countermeasure orders to fishermen in the advisory waters, urging compliance with fish farm management guidelines such as stopping feed supply, installing shading nets, and early harvesting.”
Ha Haeseong, Director of Fisheries Resources Division, emphasized, “A high water temperature advisory has been issued for all coastal waters in the province, and a warning for Sacheonman and Gangjinman, raising concerns about damage to aquaculture products. We must share water temperature changes during the high water temperature period and actively respond by combining public and private efforts.”
