Presidential Office Reconfirms "Yoon Did Not Meet Pelosi, Speaker of the US House" and No Coordination
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] The Presidential Office reiterated on the 3rd that President Yoon Seok-yeol, who is on vacation, will not meet with Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
In a press release in the afternoon, the Presidential Office stated, "There is no change from the briefing this morning that the meeting between President Yoon and Speaker Pelosi did not take place due to the President's vacation schedule."
A key official from the Presidential Office said to reporters at the Yongsan Presidential Office building in the morning, "President Yoon's vacation schedule overlapped with Speaker Pelosi's visit to Korea, so no separate meeting was arranged."
The official added, "Regarding Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, our government maintains the position that peace and stability in the region through dialogue and cooperation are important, and we will keep close communication with regional stakeholders," and expressed hope that "there will be many achievements through consultations between the Speakers of the National Assemblies of Korea and the U.S."
However, some media outlets reported from the afternoon, citing ruling party and Presidential Office officials, that a meeting between President Yoon and Speaker Pelosi on the 4th was being coordinated. When Pelosi decided to visit Korea, President Yoon was scheduled for local engagements during his summer vacation and had decided not to meet, but since he canceled those local engagements and is staying in Seoul, a meeting might be possible.
Regarding this, another Presidential Office official said there was "no coordination" for a meeting between President Yoon and Speaker Pelosi.
Speaker Pelosi is scheduled to hold a private meeting for about 90 minutes with National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo at the National Assembly on the morning of the 4th, followed by a joint press conference.
