Gwangju Police Riot Unit Officer Unauthorized Absence from Duty Location... Internal Investigation Under Review
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] It has been confirmed that senior officers of the police riot squad under the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency left their posts without permission.
According to the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency on the 28th, three mid-level police officers of the riot squad under its jurisdiction were found to have left their posts and gone home without permission while assigned to traffic and night patrol duties between June and July.
The unauthorized absence time of the detected squad leaders totaled less than 10 hours each, and it has not been confirmed whether such incidents had occurred habitually before.
The police explained that due to limitations in investigating through closed-circuit television (CCTV), they identified the facts by conducting face-to-face interviews with the officers, and were unable to verify work details from more than two months ago.
However, internal whistleblowing has raised allegations that leaving posts and unauthorized early departures have been ongoing practices for a long time.
The squad leaders reportedly denied the allegations during their statements.
