Suncheon City Council Listens to Major Current Projects... Legislative Activities in Full Swing
2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo and Gyeongjeon Line Progress Check, etc.
[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] The Suncheon City Council (Chairman Jeong Byeong-hoe) announced on the 27th that it held a briefing session on key projects related to the ‘2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo,’ ‘New City Hall Construction Project,’ and ‘Gyeongjeon Line Electrification.’
The briefing session on the progress of major projects in Suncheon City, held the previous day in the Suncheon City Council’s small conference room, was attended by all city council members and served as a time to acquire information for in-depth legislative activities, showcasing the council’s commitment to being a working, strong, and trusted council.
Upon receiving the report on the first item, the ‘2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo Development Plan,’ the council members exchanged opinions on visitor attraction plans, spatial arrangements, and various promotional strategies to ensure the successful hosting of the garden expo.
They also compared it with the 2013 Suncheonman International Garden Expo, discussing financial management, revenue-generating projects, and operational management methods, hoping that the garden expo to be held next year will produce competitive results.
Regarding the ‘New City Hall Construction Project,’ they requested the expansion of citizen convenience facilities and securing parking spaces, emphasizing sufficient communication with the council during the design phase of the new city hall.
At the briefing on the ‘Gyeongjeon Line Electrification Project,’ it was pointed out that the Ministry of Economy and Finance and Jeollanam-do Province have taken a stance that changing the plan for the existing route passing through downtown Suncheon is difficult, citing economic feasibility alone, which could significantly worsen residential conditions by causing noise pollution and traffic congestion for citizens in the future.
Among the alternatives, the undergrounding plan for the downtown area was judged to be almost ineffective due to the Isa Stream and Dongcheon, and it was urged to focus all administrative efforts on changing the plan to a route bypassing the downtown area, even if the project cost increases somewhat. The council also pledged full support at the council level.
Chairman Jeong Byeong-hoe and 24 council members concluded the briefing by stating, “We will identify various projects and pending tasks to be implemented in the second half of the year and carry out legislative activities that reflect the opinions of citizens.”

They also added, “The council will actively cooperate for the successful hosting of the 2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo, which can showcase Suncheon’s potential, and we hope that the new city hall construction, which will be easily accessible to everyone, and the Gyeongjeon Line electrification project, which prioritizes citizens’ safety, will be promoted.”
