View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] Hanwha Impact announced on the 27th its plan to establish large-scale hydrogen production facilities by 2026 through the development of eco-friendly ammonia technology. The company expressed its commitment to building a clean energy value chain based on carbon-free ammonia and accelerating the realization of carbon neutrality.
Ammonia enables large-scale hydrogen storage and is relatively easily liquefied under ambient temperature and pressure conditions, making it a promising next-generation hydrogen carrier. It is also classified as low-carbon hydrogen compound under the revised Hydrogen Act as clean hydrogen. Another advantage is that existing liquefied ammonia transportation infrastructure can be utilized as is.
On the same day, Hanwha Impact signed a joint research and development and commercialization agreement with Wonik Materials for large-scale hydrogen production based on ammonia at the Plaza Hotel in Seoul. The event was attended by Kim Hee-cheol, CEO of Hanwha Impact, and Han Jung-wook, CEO of Wonik Materials.
Through this joint research, Hanwha Impact will be responsible for developing ammonia decomposition-based processes and facility construction for commercial clean hydrogen production, while Wonik Materials will develop and supply commercial-grade ammonia decomposition catalysts. Both companies plan to collaborate on eco-friendly hydrogen supply projects targeting large-scale hydrogen demand by exploring mass production methods of ammonia-based clean hydrogen.
On this day, Kim Hee-cheol, CEO of Hanwha Impact, said, "Hanwha Impact will accelerate the transition to a carbon-neutral society through world-class hydrogen gas turbine technology and large-scale hydrogen production via ammonia reforming."
Additionally, Han Jung-wook, CEO of Wonik Materials, stated, "We will take the lead in the commercial supply business of large-scale commercial-grade catalysts by applying Wonik Materials' ammonia decomposition catalyst technology."
