[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] A regional innovation platform that fosters talent in advanced and core industries in collaboration with local universities and local governments will be launched in Daegu and Gyeongbuk. A total of 300 billion KRW will be invested over five years to cultivate key talent in the future car and electronic information device industries.
The Ministry of Education will hold the launch ceremony of the 'Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional Innovation Platform' at Kyungpook National University on the 28th. Including Daegu-Gyeongbuk and Gangwon, which were newly selected this year, the regional innovation platform is currently operating in six regions in total.
The Ministry of Education is preparing a regional talent development system so that local talents can find jobs and settle down in their regions, in line with the national agenda of 'Now is the era of local universities.'
To discuss regional talent development plans tailored to local circumstances, support will be provided for the formation and operation of regional higher education councils involving local governments and local universities. The introduction of a 'Regional Talent Investment Agreement System,' where central government ministries and regions sign agreements to establish a system linking elementary, secondary, higher education, employment, and settlement led by the region, is also being promoted.
The Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional Innovation Platform has selected electronic information devices and future car transition parts as core fields, with participation from Daegu Metropolitan City, Gyeongsangbuk-do, 23 universities including Kyungpook National University and Yeungnam University, and 214 regional innovation institutions such as LIG Nex1, Hwashin, Hyundai Robotics, and SL.
By February 2027, a total of 300 billion KRW combining national and local funds will be invested to train 1,140 talents annually. The goal is to raise the regional settlement rate?the percentage of Daegu-Gyeongbuk university graduates who find employment or start a business in the region?from 23% last year to 60% by 2026.
A DGM Shared University involving 23 universities in the area will be established, offering five courses (tracks) by major in electronic information devices and future car transition parts to cultivate core talents. It aims to nurture 400 innovative talents, 500 convergent talents, and 200 practical talents. To enhance the competitiveness of regional key industries, support for technology development and product improvement will also be provided.

Jang Sang-yoon, Vice Minister of Education, said, "To create a regional development ecosystem that links regional talent cultivation with employment, entrepreneurship, and settlement, it is most important for various local actors such as local governments and local universities, who best understand the local situation, to cooperate and seek development plans together. We will actively support expanding financial support for local universities and enabling regions and local universities to overcome crises on their own through specialized higher education innovation areas."
