View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yeo Jong-gu] POSCO Pohang Steelworks has taken a step further in building an eco-friendly steelworks by actively investing in the environment.
Pohang Steelworks invested 875.7 billion KRW in environmental projects over the past three years from 2018 to 2021.
They made bold investments of 856.1 billion KRW to improve air quality, including the construction of eight enclosed coal storage facilities and the installation of new sintering nitrogen oxide reduction equipment. Additionally, 19.6 billion KRW was invested in reducing water pollutant emissions and strengthening hazardous chemical management.
Furthermore, from this year through 2024, an additional environmental investment of approximately 957.8 billion KRW is planned, with 860.7 billion KRW allocated to reducing air pollutant emissions through yard enclosure and dust collector improvements, and 97.1 billion KRW for water treatment facilities and byproduct recycling equipment upgrades.
Based on various environmental investments such as sintering and power generation nitrogen oxide reduction facilities and major repairs of dust collectors, the TMS (stack automatic measuring system) emissions decreased by 41% over two years, from 175,000 tons in 2019 to 103,000 tons in 2021, demonstrating the effectiveness of the environmental investments.
In June, Pohang Steelworks completed the installation of dust collector breathers across all blast furnaces, putting an end to previous controversies and concerns regarding breather openings. The newly installed dust collector breathers purify gases generated during blast furnace breather openings and have been recognized by the Ministry of Environment for reducing dust emissions by 90%.
