Prosecutors Restart 'Insurance Crime Joint Task Force' Centered at Central District Prosecutors' Office
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The prosecution is resuming the operation of the "Joint Task Force on Insurance Crimes" to strictly crack down on "insurance crimes" that cause multiple damages to ordinary citizens.
According to the legal community on the 24th, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office held a meeting yesterday with officials from relevant departments responsible for responding to crimes such as insurance fraud to discuss the joint task force on insurance crimes. At this meeting, participants shared the current status of insurance fraud and response measures, and discussed plans to strengthen inter-agency cooperation and future activity plans.
The joint task force is operated centered on the 9th Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Gu Tae-yeon), which is in charge of insurance and gambling-related offenses, with participation from nine related agencies including the National Police Agency, the Financial Supervisory Service, and the National Health Insurance Service. The task force was launched in 2009 when damages caused by insurance fraud became a social issue.
In its early days, the task force achieved results by arresting about 10,000 insurance fraud offenders annually, but after being transferred from the Central District Prosecutors' Office to the Supreme Prosecutors' Office in 2017, its operation was effectively suspended. However, recently, considering the reality that insurance crimes are becoming increasingly organized and sophisticated, leading to large-scale criminal damages, the prosecution has reorganized the joint task force centered on the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office last month and begun preparations to resume its operation.
This move appears to align with the government's national policy to strictly punish crimes causing multiple damages to ordinary citizens and aims to eradicate insurance crimes threatening people's livelihoods through thorough investigations.
