[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] President Yoon Suk-yeol stated on the 22nd, "The expectations that the public has for the new government are not ideological but to prioritize people’s livelihood, and not populist, popularity-seeking policies but to establish a foundation for the country’s new leap forward, even if it requires effort."
President Yoon made these remarks during his opening speech at the 'Yoon Suk-yeol Government Ministers and Vice Ministers National Agenda Workshop' held in the afternoon at the Gwacheon National Human Resources Development Institute for Public Officials.
At the event, President Yoon also said, "The economy is currently in an emergency and facing a complex crisis. It is difficult to overcome this with conventional methods or habitual measures."
He urged policy communication with the public along with restructuring and reform of public sector expenditures. The intention is that public institutions should take the lead in reducing budgets and swiftly respond to the current situation in terms of organization and personnel, especially when people’s livelihoods are difficult.
He also repeatedly emphasized, "Ministers must take the forefront in national administration, and many 'star ministers' should emerge."
At the workshop, the Minister for Government Policy Coordination reported on the 'National Agenda Implementation Plan.' Following this, Chief Secretary Kim Dae-gi delivered a keynote presentation on the 'Domestic and International Conditions and National Administration Direction.' Ministers and vice ministers divided into six groups to discuss tasks to be focused on in the second half of the year and beyond.
President Yoon stated, "There may be many difficulties during the implementation of national agendas. Even though these reform tasks are essential for the sustainability of our society, resistance from vested interests is expected in many cases," adding, "Intensive expenditure restructuring and public institution reform cannot be avoided either."
He continued, "At those times, I ask (ministers and vice ministers) to think from the public’s perspective, and first, second, and third, to consider the public interest and the country’s future," emphasizing, "For that, government decision-making must be based not on ideology but on practicality and science, grounded in objective facts and data, and there must always be communication with the public."
At the workshop, the new government’s 120 national agendas were finalized.
