Revenge Spending Boosts Popularity of High-End Products... Baccarat and Wedgwood Sales Double
[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Market Kurly announced on the 21st that the popularity of high-end brands in the kitchenware category has increased due to the combined effects of the home-cooked meal trend and premium trend that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Market Kurly, which has been steadily offering kitchenware since 2016, actively expanded its category as demand for home-cooked meals increased due to the impact of COVID-19. As of this month, the number of products sold reached about 2,700, nearly double compared to the previous year. Market Kurly stated, "We are introducing kitchenware that can be used at every moment?from purchasing ingredients, cooking, enjoying meals, to storing food."
In particular, demand for high-end brands with higher price ranges has increased. Market Kurly analyzed that the trend of "revenge consumption," where demand shifts to luxury or premium home appliances due to reduced overseas travel, has also been reflected in kitchenware. For example, the 100% handmade crystal glasses from Baccarat, a French brand with a 250-year history, saw sales more than double in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year, despite prices reaching up to 1 million KRW.
As demand grew for properly enjoying even a single meal at home, sales of pressure cookers from the German cookware brand Fissler increased more than threefold, and sales of Vermicular oven pots and Wedgwood ceramic cups also doubled. Hermes plates and cups, introduced as a pop-up in March, sold out all prepared stock within two days of sales.
In response, Market Kurly is strengthening product competitiveness by exclusively offering items such as the JR Plate from the French luxury ceramic brand Bernardaud and the Caribbean Blue cast iron pot from Le Creuset, which has continued the tradition of cast iron for over 100 years. Various other high-end brands such as De Buyer, Staub, Skeppshult, and Scanpan have also newly joined the platform.
