On the afternoon of the same day, Park mentioned on her Facebook that Choi’s hardline supporters had launched a massive attack against her on Twitter, referring to comments Choi made to the audience at a film screening event.
May 4th, 10 PM - Apology statement from Representative Choi Kang-wook posted on the Democratic Party of Korea website / Photo by Democratic Party of Korea website
View original imageEarlier, on the night of May 4th, a post titled ‘Apology Letter from Lawmaker Choi Kangwook’ was uploaded on the ‘Notices’ board of the Democratic Party’s website. This was an apology letter from Choi, who caused controversy with sexual harassment remarks and a ‘Jjaljjal-i explanation.’
Meanwhile, YouTuber Goyanginews, who creates political content, claimed on the 15th that during the ‘You Are Jo Guk’ GV (Guest Visit ? Q&A with the audience) held at Megabox in Isu Station, Choi said, "I have never seen the apology letter. Park Jihyun wrote it and posted it." Goyanginews posted a photo of Choi attending the GV and stated that they were also present at the event.
In response, on the 17th, Park wrote on Facebook that it was a "statement that makes one doubt their eyes and ears," adding, "I can’t believe Choi would say such a thing. If he really did, he should publicly apologize." Park also expressed suffering from cyberattacks by Choi’s supporters due to the Goyanginews video.
She continued, "After the sexual harassment incident involving Choi occurred, I spoke directly with him for 2 minutes and 54 seconds starting at 9:23:46 PM on May 4th. As leadership, I consulted with Floor Leader Park Honggeun and judged that a prompt apology from Choi was necessary."
She added, "The draft of the apology letter was first presented to me by Floor Leader Park, I gave additional opinions, and then Floor Leader Park and Choi Kangwook agreed on the final version. My call with Choi happened right after this agreement. I asked Choi again if he had reviewed the entire apology letter, and he confirmed he had seen the final draft and agreed to post it."
According to Park’s post, she told Choi to post the apology letter on social media, but Choi suggested, "Since there is already a one-sentence apology posted on social media, it might seem too contrived, so let’s only post it on the party’s website."
Park said, "So I agreed to Choi’s proposal. Also, since he said he didn’t know how to post it on the party website, I said I would instruct party staff to post Choi’s apology letter on the Democratic Party’s website. This is the truth."
She stated, "Blind fandom blocks normal judgment. If Choi never saw the apology letter posted, then why did he remain silent for two months? Yet, hardline supporters start pouring out unspeakable curses on social media without even this common-sense suspicion."
Park warned, "This kind of fandom is dangerous. Return to the confident Choi Kangwook of before. I hope you resist the temptation of fandom and apologize confidently even now."
