Yeosun Incident Task Manager Workshop Held in Yeosu, the Site of the Incident
Over 80 Participants Including the Practical Committee and 22 Jeonnam City and County Officials Attended
Heated Discussions Continued on Improving Damage Report Reception Measures
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Cheol-hoon] Jeonnam Yeosu City (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) announced on the 15th that the Yeosu-Suncheon 10·19 Incident Truth Investigation and Victims' Honor Restoration Committee (hereinafter Yeosun Incident Committee, Chairman Prime Minister Han Deok-soo) held a workshop for officials in 'Yeosu,' the site where the incident occurred.
A total of about 80 people, including the working committee and officials from 22 cities and counties of Jeollanam-do, attended.
The workshop was held under the theme "United Hearts for Truth Investigation and Victims' Honor Restoration," and proceeded in the order of expert lectures, job training, group discussions and task presentations, free discussions, evaluations and awards, and general remarks.
In particular, heated discussions focused on difficulties experienced on site, such as improvement plans for victim report reception and publicity measures to overcome the lack of public awareness.
The Yeosun Incident Committee plans to reflect the opinions presented at this workshop and, in the second half of the year, to increase the reporting and reception rate beyond the regional limitations of Jeollanam-do into a nationwide movement.
The workshop was made more meaningful by the attendance of Yeosun Incident Committee members, local bereaved family association presidents, and Yeosu Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong.
Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong of Yeosu said in his welcoming speech, "The Yeosun Incident is not simply a problem limited to Yeosu, Suncheon, or the eastern region of Jeonnam, but a history that the entire Republic of Korea must remember," and promised, "Yeosu, the site of the incident, will take the lead in healing the wounds of the bereaved families and doing its best to create a future of hope and harmony."
Jang Heon-beom, head of the Yeosun Incident Committee, which hosted the workshop, said, "Since a considerable number of victims have died or are elderly, truth investigation and honor restoration are urgent," and added, "We will devote all our capabilities to uncover the historical truth of the Yeosun Incident and to truly restore the honor of the victims."
Meanwhile, the victim report period for the Yeosun Incident is until January 20 of next year.
