A Fresh Challenge and Change for Moshi Facing Extinction Risk
Korea National University of Cultural Heritage Special Exhibition 'Mosi, Weaving Yesterday and Today'
The Cultural Heritage Administration's Korea National University of Cultural Heritage will hold a special exhibition titled "Mosi, Weaving Yesterday and Today" from the 14th to the 23rd at Yeol Bukchon Hanok in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The exhibition showcases works by students majoring in Traditional Textile Studies within the Department of Traditional Arts and Crafts, highlighting the achievements of their specialized educational program as well as various efforts to continue the value of mosi fabric. Key works include Baekmosi (white mosi fabric) created by Bang Yeon-ok, a holder of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage title for Hansan Mosi weaving, textiles made through collaboration between Studio Oh Yu-kyung and students featuring Sajeogyojik (a fabric woven by mixing silk and mosi threads), and handwoven mosi textile pieces. Baekmosi refers to fabric woven from mosi plants that has undergone a bleaching process. A university official stated, "This is an opportunity to raise awareness of the unique beauty of mosi, which is on the verge of extinction, and to emphasize the importance of preserving and passing down traditional culture," adding, "We hope this will be a fresh challenge and turning point for traditional textiles."
