Recently, according to the BBC, detailed information about the cause of death of Oriana Pepper (21), a pilot trainee at British airline EasyJet, was revealed during an inquest held on the 6th (local time) at the coroner's court in Suffolk, UK.
Pepper had died five days after being bitten by a mosquito in Antwerp, Belgium, on July 7 last year. However, it was highly unusual for a young and healthy person in their 20s to die from a mosquito bite, raising questions about the cause of death. Moreover, Pepper had been bitten by mosquitoes many times before without any abnormal symptoms.
According to the coroner, Pepper was bitten by a mosquito on her forehead and around her right eye. Shortly after, the bitten area became severely swollen, and she was admitted to the hospital emergency room. The emergency room only prescribed antibiotics and sent her home.
However, two days later, Pepper collapsed due to shock symptoms and was taken to the hospital. Her condition worsened compared to before, and she eventually died in the hospital three days later.
The exact cause of death was septic embolism. It was explained that bacteria that penetrated through the mosquito bite blocked an artery leading to the brain, causing Pepper's death.
On that day, coroner Nigel Parsley said, "Pepper died due to an infection at the mosquito bite site. I have never seen such a case before," adding, "If it had not been for the mosquito, it would have been a great tragedy for someone who was about to build a wonderful career."
Online, messages mourning Pepper's tragic death continue to appear.

Pepper had passed the EasyJet airline theoretical exam and was undergoing additional training in Belgium. According to the BBC, her mother established a small scholarship foundation for women aspiring to become pilots, together with the British Women Pilots Association. Currently, messages mourning Pepper's tragic death continue to appear online.

Meanwhile, caution is advised as being bitten by mosquitoes carrying disease-causing bacteria can lead to illness. If bitten by a mosquito, it is best not to scratch even if it itches. Also, applying saliva to the bitten area should be avoided. This is because bacteria can enter through the wound and develop into cellulitis (erysipelas). Especially during the summer when temperature and humidity are high, bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, a major cause of cellulitis, can easily multiply, so extra care is necessary.
