Seoul City to Intensively Collect Abandoned Bicycles Until the End of July... Improving Urban Aesthetics
Expansion of Collection Areas to Private Properties Including Municipal Sports Facilities, Parks, and Apartments
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 6th that it will operate a concentrated collection period for abandoned bicycles until the end of July, aiming to improve user convenience by securing bicycle parking spaces and enhancing urban aesthetics through the maintenance of abandoned bicycles in public places such as bicycle storage facilities. This time, municipal sports and park facilities including Seoul Forest and World Cup Stadium will also be included in the collection areas with the cooperation of the facility management authorities.
Currently, since there is no legal authority to collect, bicycles abandoned on private property that local governments do not collect will be collected free of charge on a temporary basis until the end of July. However, for bicycles abandoned on private property, collection will proceed only after the management authority completes internal notification and disposal notice, and applies to the bicycle department of the relevant autonomous district office.
Among the collected abandoned bicycles, those from 10 districts where recycled bicycles are produced will be refurbished and sold to citizens both online and offline. Since the launch of the online pilot sale through the bicycle secondhand trading platform ‘Light Brothers’ in January, a total of 1,032 bicycles have been sold online and offline, generating sales revenue of 83,917,000 KRW. The revenue generated is used for revitalizing local self-support projects and other costs.
