The 12th Honbul Literary Award, Kim Myung-joo's 'Dark Blue Whale Yona'
[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] Author Kim Myung-joo's Dark Blue Whale Yona has been selected as the winning work of the 12th Honbul Literary Award.
The novel introduces events experienced by the protagonist, a former K-pop idol who gives up on her dreams after an unfortunate accident and unexpectedly meets a whale-human. Through the fantastic motif of the whale-human, it conveys awareness of environmental and climate issues of our time.
The judging panel commented, "Despite the vast manuscript length, the vivid sentences and bold storytelling were very impressive," adding, "In particular, the active use of popular culture's imagination stimulates interest."
The judges included Eun Hee-kyung (Chair), Jeon Seong-tae (Professor at Suncheon National University), Lee Ki-ho (Professor at Gwangju University), Pyeon Hye-young (Professor at Myongji University), and Baek Ga-heum (Professor at Keimyung University), all novelists.

The prize money is 70 million won. The winning work is scheduled to be published as a standalone book by Dasan Books at the end of September.
