At 10 a.m. on the same day, during the 72nd anniversary event of the Korean War held at Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul, Prime Minister Han said, "Our people were great and have been great. Overcoming the tragedy of war, they rose again with bare fists from the ruins and ashes."
Prime Minister Han stated, "72 years ago today, the Korean War, which began with the communist forces' invasion, turned the entire country into ashes. During the 1,129 days of war, about 175,000 of our soldiers and UN forces died, and about 28,000 went missing. 100,000 children lost their parents and wandered the streets, and 300,000 women lost their husbands during the war. 3.2 million compatriots had to leave their beloved hometowns, and 1,000 citizens suffered the pain of separation," mentioning the deep and indelible wounds and pain left in the hearts of our people.
He continued, "From being the world's poorest country with a per capita income of 67 dollars receiving aid, we have become one of the world's top 10 economic powers providing aid." "All of today's history was made possible by the shining courage, fighting spirit, sacrifice, and contribution of the war veterans who willingly jumped into the front lines for the freedom and peace of this land. The Republic of Korea will never forget its national heroes," he pledged.
He added, "We will not forget the red blood of heroes spilled on the motherland and the passionate sacrifices of the young people who came from distant countries for freedom and peace," and said, "We will wholeheartedly repay with 'world-class veterans affairs where the state takes full responsibility' so that war veterans and their families can live healthier and more honorable lives." He also promised, "Next year, for the 70th anniversary of the armistice, we will prepare the gratitude event with the highest honors for domestic and overseas veterans and the 22 UN participating countries."
Prime Minister Han also vowed to protect our security against North Korea's provocations. He said, "Recently, North Korea's repeated missile launches and nuclear threats are endangering not only the Korean Peninsula but also the stability of Northeast Asia and even world peace," and emphasized, "Our government will strengthen security posture based on a strong Korea-US alliance and respond swiftly and firmly by mobilizing all necessary means."
He added, "At the same time, we will not neglect diplomatic efforts to lead international cooperation for peace on the Korean Peninsula along with humanitarian aid to North Korea," and said, "We will protect the Republic of Korea, the land of freedom defended by veterans, as a Korean Peninsula of peace and prosperity."
