Concerns Over Hosting the 'Summer Universiade' Dispelled... Chungcheong Region Elected Officials United in Agreement
[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The newly elected governors of the four cities and provinces in the Chungcheong region?Daejeon, Sejong, Chungnam, and Chungbuk?are joining forces to support the bid to host the ‘2027 Summer Universiade’ in the Chungcheong area.
On the 21st, Daejeon City announced that it recently delivered a joint letter with this content to the International University Sports Federation (FISU).
The four cities and provinces in the Chungcheong region submitted a letter of intent to host the Summer Universiade to the international federation last September and are currently competing for the final host city status alongside North Carolina, USA.
However, following the recent local elections in which all the heads of the Chungcheong region were replaced, concerns have arisen among the international federation, domestic and international sports circles, and some media outlets that the momentum for the Chungcheong region’s bid to host the Summer Universiade might weaken.
In response, the newly elected governors of the Chungcheong region reaffirmed the region’s firm commitment to hosting the Summer Universiade and delivered a letter to the federation’s headquarters promising that “even after the launch of the new local governments, support for the bid and the successful hosting of the event will not be spared.”

The Chungcheong Joint Bid Committee stated, “The Chungcheong region’s ‘1 million signature campaign’ for hosting the Summer Universiade surpassed 500,000 signatures, half of the target, on the 9th, and then exceeded 584,000 signatures on the 16th, just a week later, showing that enthusiasm for the bid is rapidly spreading throughout the Chungcheong area. The committee will do its best to ensure that Chungcheong is selected as the final host at the executive committee vote held in Belgium in November, following the international federation’s technical inspection next month and the evaluation team’s site visit in August.”
