Rain of 5~20mm in Jeju Island from tonight until the 21st
Less than 5mm rain on the southern coast of Gyeongnam due to terrain effects
Rain nationwide in southern and central regions from the 23rd
Heatwave continues mainly in the southern inland areas until the 22nd
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The rainy season will begin in Jeju Island from the night of the 20th. There is a high possibility that the rainy season will start in the southern and central regions from the 23rd.
On the 20th, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) held an occasional briefing and announced that the rainy season will start in the Jeju area from the night of the 20th, with rainfall of about 5 to 20mm. Initially, the KMA had analyzed that the rain would affect parts of the southern coast, but the rainy season on the 20th has been revised to start only in the Jeju area. From dawn to morning on the 21st, less than 5mm of rain will fall in some parts of the southern coast of Gyeongnam as water vapor meets the east wind. The rain falling in the southern coastal area is caused by airflow convergence due to the terrain.
Lee Kwang-yeon, a forecast analyst at the KMA, explained, "As the low pressure located near Shanghai moves northward, Jeju Island will enter the rainy season from the night of the 20th to the 21st under the influence of the stationary front."
The rainy season in the central and southern regions is expected to begin after the 23rd. Rain is forecast nationwide due to the influence of a low pressure system developing in the west. However, the low pressure system is small and highly variable. Although the North Pacific High is expanding westward, the movement direction and speed of the low pressure system may vary.
The forecast analyst said, "From the afternoon of the 23rd to the 24th, the low pressure system will have an impact, but the atmospheric pressure system is highly variable. If it rains, it can be said that the rainy season will start in the southern and central regions around the 23rd, but more detailed information will be explained in the briefing on the 22nd."
The KMA did not mention the expected precipitation amounts for the 23rd to 24th but predicted that the rainfall intensity will be strong. The analyst explained, "Cold air from the north and warm, moist air will directly collide, and the stationary front on the rear side will be compressed, likely bringing heavy rain that will help alleviate the drought."
After the low pressure system passes eastward, the stationary front will move southward, and from the 24th onward, showers are expected in inland areas, while rain will continue in Jeju Island and some parts of the southern regions due to the influence of the stationary front. The analyst explained, "The mid-term forecast initially predicted rain only in areas south of Chungcheong until the 25th, but it will be changed to nationwide precipitation."
Even after the rainy season begins, the heatwave will persist mainly in the southern inland areas until the 22nd. Due to the influence of high pressure, the weather will be clear, and the ground surface will heat up, making it very hot. As of the 20th, heatwave warnings have been issued for most areas in the Gyeongsang region. From the 23rd, as the low pressure system moves in from the west, temperatures are expected to gradually decrease.

Regarding the scheduled launch of the Korean-type launch vehicle Nuriho on the 21st, the area around Oenarodo, Goheung-gun, Jeonnam Province, is expected to have a low possibility of lightning in the afternoon, with somewhat strong winds in the lower atmosphere. At an altitude of 800 to 900 meters, winds will reach 10 m/s in the afternoon of the 21st, while surface winds will be weak at 1 to 3 m/s. The launch conditions for Nuriho require that the 10-minute average wind speed and the instantaneous maximum wind speed at ground level be below 15 m/s and 21 m/s, respectively.
