Gyeongbuk Province Recommends 'Farmhouse Restaurants' Targeting Summer Tourists' Tastes
Agricultural Technology Institute Selects Must-Visit Local Summer Restaurants for Rural Tourism
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Gwiyeol] The Gyeongbuk Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services recommends carefully selected farmhouse restaurants that use seasonal ingredients to create delicious dishes, making them essential stops for rural tourism during the summer travel season.
Since the social distancing measures were lifted on April 18 and the COVID-19 infectious disease level was downgraded to level 2, the public's return to normal life has been accelerating.
According to data from the Korea Tourism Data Lab, the number of tourists visiting Gyeongbuk from January to April this year increased by 6.4% compared to the same period last year, and the proportion of overnight visitors also rose by 9.1%.
With the lifting of social distancing, domestic travel is expected to increase along with consumption related to food within the region. In particular, demand for trips to rural areas for healing and relaxation is expected to expand significantly.
In response, the Agricultural Research and Extension Services has carefully selected and recommended five farmhouse restaurants that highlight summer seasonal ingredients.
In Andong, you can enjoy Hwaronjeongsik at Andong Hwaryeon, featuring lotus leaf rice made from lotus (蓮) grown locally, Andong salted mackerel stew, and sorghum steak. In Yeongcheon, Deundam offers a set meal of Hongshan garlic squid bulgogi, made with medicinal herbs and functional red ginseng garlic varieties developed by the Rural Development Administration.
Also recommended are Memilkkotpimyeon, where you can taste cool buckwheat noodles made from homemade noodles; Taesanjeongsik at Taesan, filled with plenty of Uiseong garlic and eggplant; and Mil, a farmhouse restaurant specializing in a melon chicken grilled set meal from Seongju, the hometown of melons.
Farmhouse restaurants are rural dining culture spaces fostered by the Agricultural Research and Extension Services to utilize local agricultural products and preserve traditional local cuisine. Currently, 27 locations are designated and operated within the region.
By cooking with directly produced agricultural products or ingredients sourced locally, they offer healthy meals throughout the year.
Shin Yongseup, Director of the Agricultural Research and Extension Services, said, “The meals at farmhouse restaurants are healthy in themselves because they are prepared with our agricultural products. If you want to taste a lovingly prepared mother’s meal, I hope you experience the specialized farmhouse restaurant meals as an essential course of rural travel.”
