View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] Kwangdong Pharmaceutical announced on the 20th that it held the '11th Kwangdong Cancer Academic Award' ceremony for seven researchers in three categories who contributed to the advancement of cancer research in Korea, in collaboration with the Korean Cancer Association.
The Kwangdong Cancer Academic Award is an academic award jointly established by Kwangdong Pharmaceutical and the Korean Cancer Association in 2012 to support basic and clinical research in the field of cancer. It is awarded annually to researchers who have contributed to the advancement of cancer research by publishing excellent papers in domestic and international SCI-level academic journals. The awards are given in three categories: basic medical science, clinical medicine, and multiple paper publications.
In the basic medical science category, Professor Im Seok-ah of the Department of Internal Medicine at Seoul National University College of Medicine, Professor Yang Han-kwang of Surgery, Professor Kim Jong-il of the Department of Biochemistry, and Professor Charles Lee of the Department of Life Sciences at Ewha Womans University received the award for their joint research paper titled ‘Predictive biomarkers for 5-fluorouracil and oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy in gastric cancers via profiling of patient-derived xenografts,’ published in the international journal Nature Communications (Nat Commun, 2020, IF 14.919).
In the clinical medicine category, Professor Jeon Hong-jae and Professor Kim Chan of the Department of Internal Medicine at CHA University College of Medicine were honored for their paper ‘STING activation normalizes the intraperitoneal vascular-immune microenvironment and suppresses peritoneal carcinomatosis of colon cancer,’ published in the international journal Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer (J Immunother Cancer, 2020, IF 13.751).
Professor Shin Dong-wook of the Department of Family Medicine at Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine received the award in the multiple paper publications category for his contributions, including several prominent papers published in the official journal of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, the Journal of Thoracic Oncology (J Thorac Oncol, 2020, IF 15.609).

The awardees received a prize of 5 million KRW and a certificate. A Kwangdong Pharmaceutical official stated, “The Kwangdong Cancer Academic Award was established to discover and honor medical researchers who have achieved outstanding research results in the field of cancer, thereby supporting the advancement of cancer research in Korea,” adding, “We hope that cancer research by domestic medical staff will be further activated and contribute to the improvement of public health.”
