Park Ji-hyun "Severe Punishment Must Be Imposed on Choi Kang-wook... Hope Democratic Party Chooses the Path of Innovation"
Opened the Party Ethics Committee Today to Discuss Disciplinary Actions
Breaking Silence After 3 Weeks, Demanding Strong Punishment
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] Former co-chair of the Democratic Party of Korea's Emergency Response Committee, Park Ji-hyun, broke her silence after three weeks and expressed her stance on the disciplinary discussion regarding Representative Choi Kang-wook. She strongly demanded punishment, saying, "I hope that today a heavy punishment will be imposed on Representative Choi and that the Democratic Party will clearly prove that it has embarked on the path of innovation that the people desire."
On the 20th, former Chair Park released a statement on Facebook, saying, "I hope the Democratic Party chooses the path of innovation today."
She said, "There are two paths ahead of the Democratic Party now. One is the path of innovation: punishing comrades' wrongdoings and approaching the people. The other is the path of fandom: protecting comrades and being abandoned by the people."
She emphasized, "It will be decided today, based on the Ethics Committee's decision on Representative Choi Kang-wook, which path the Democratic Party will take."
She continued, "Ahead of the local elections, the Democratic Party promised to impose appropriate disciplinary actions for Representative Choi's sexual harassment remarks, the concealment attempts by fellow lawmakers, and the secondary harm. This was not a promise by former Emergency Response Committee Chair Park Ji-hyun, but a promise of the Democratic Party."
Former Chair Park said, "Representative Choi delayed appearing before the Ethics Committee, which postponed the disciplinary process. I demanded emergency disciplinary action, but our party did not accept it, and eventually promised the public that the Ethics Committee would discipline him after the election," adding, "If the punishment is only minor or the disciplinary action is delayed again, or if the punishment excludes concealment attempts or secondary harm, the public will not believe any promises of reflection or reform from the Democratic Party."
She stated, "Representative Choi drove the party into crisis through lies, concealment, and secondary harm. He ignored the people's will to reflect and reform, indulging in the arrogance of the ruling majority and the protective fandom that shields him despite committing crimes, and caused the election defeat. His responsibility is by no means small."
Previously, former Chair Park had continuously voiced demands for disciplinary action against Representative Choi during her tenure as Emergency Response Committee Chair.
