Lim Yoon-chan was announced as the winner of the 16th Van Cliburn Competition, which concluded that morning at the Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, Texas, USA. It is the youngest winning record in the 60-year history of the Van Cliburn Competition.
In the congratulatory message, Minister Park said, "Lim Yoon-chan's talent has long been known, but with this victory, he has proven his outstanding skills and infinite artistry to the world."
He added, "I express my gratitude and encouragement to the young musicians who are conveying the dignity and charm of the Republic of Korea to the world," and urged, "I hope they grow into musicians loved by people worldwide beyond time, generations, and borders."
Lim Yoon-chan attracted attention in the domestic and international music scenes by becoming the youngest winner at age 15 in the 2019 Yoon Isang International Music Competition. After attending Yewon School, he was admitted as a gifted student to the Korea National University of Arts College of Music last year.
The 'Van Cliburn International Piano Competition' is the world's most prestigious piano competition held every four years in Fort Worth, USA. It honors American pianist Van Cliburn (1934?2013), who emerged as an "American hero" by winning the first Tchaikovsky International Competition held in the Soviet Union in 1958 during the harsh Cold War era.
Renowned domestic and international pianists such as Radu Lupu, Alexei Sultanov, Olga Kern, and Son Yeol-eum have participated in this competition.
