Biden Stuck on 'Inflation'... Would He Lose If He Faced Trump Now?
Biden 42% vs Trump 44% in Virtual Matchup
61% of Respondents Do Not Support Economic Policies or Management
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Se-eun] U.S. President Joe Biden's approval rating has, for the first time, been surpassed by former President Donald Trump.
According to U.S. local media on the 17th (local time), a virtual presidential election survey conducted by Yahoo News and polling agency YouGov from the 10th to the 13th, targeting 1,541 U.S. adults, showed that 42% said they would vote for President Biden, while 44% said they would vote for former President Trump.
Although this result is within the margin of error (±2.9 percentage points), it is the first time Trump has led President Biden in a hypothetical matchup. A year ago, in a similar virtual contest, President Biden led former President Trump by 9 percentage points.
Both individuals have expressed their intention to run in the 2024 presidential election, raising the possibility of a 'return match' of the 2020 election in the U.S.
In this survey, more than half, 56%, responded negatively regarding President Biden's job performance. The percentage of positive responses was only 39%, which is a 3 percentage point decrease compared to the survey conducted three weeks ago.
Notably, 61% of respondents indicated they do not support President Biden's economic policies and management approach. This figure has also declined from 58% three weeks ago.
Currently, the U.S. is experiencing the worst inflation due to supply chain disruptions caused by COVID-19 and the Ukraine crisis, compounded by food shortages resulting from drought in South America, one of the world's largest grain-producing regions.
