"Keeping Busan Port Air Clean" ... BPA Smoothly Implements Emission Reduction Device Installation on Diesel Transfer Cranes
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] Busan Port Authority (BPA) is promoting the installation of Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) on Transfer Cranes (T/C) in 2022 to reduce ultrafine dust emissions at Busan Port.
T/C are cargo handling equipment used to move or lift containers in the container yard, with a total of 372 units currently operating at Busan Port.
By May 2021, BPA achieved a 91% eco-friendly conversion rate by converting 338 out of 372 T/C units to electric power and installing DPFs.
To expand the DPF pilot project, which has been promoted since 2019, to Busan Port, BPA launched the "Busan Port Diesel T/C DPF Installation Project" this year.
BPA plans to convert 18 T/C units to eco-friendly handling equipment and reduce ultrafine dust emissions by more than 80%.
Private operators will be recruited until July 29, and after evaluation and selection, the project aims to be completed within the year.
The installation cost per T/C DPF is about 103 million KRW. Of this, 90% will be subsidized by BPA and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to reduce the burden on private operators and promote the rapid expansion of eco-friendly handling equipment conversion.
BPA has already converted 78% of Busan Port yard tractors (Y/T) to eco-friendly handling equipment through LNG fuel conversion and DPF installation.
This year, BPA will continue the DPF installation project on 18 T/C units and LNG fuel conversion on 50 Y/T units, diversifying measures to improve air quality at Busan Port.
