Jin Park Consults with U.S. Secretary of Energy on Bilateral Nuclear Cooperation
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] On the 13th (local time), Foreign Minister Park Jin met with Jennifer Granholm, U.S. Secretary of Energy, in Washington DC to hold close consultations on the nuclear energy sector.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that during the meeting, the two ministers evaluated the decision made at last month's Korea-U.S. summit to strengthen nuclear cooperation, sharing the recognition that both countries, which uphold the principles of nuclear non-proliferation, are optimal partners in the nuclear energy field.
The two ministers also exchanged views on the importance of adhering to the highest standards of nuclear non-proliferation in international civilian nuclear power cooperation, the Ministry added.
Regarding nuclear non-proliferation standards, both sides mentioned the IAEA Additional Protocol, which grants the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspection authority over undeclared nuclear facilities.
The two ministers also discussed ways to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in overseas nuclear power markets.

Furthermore, they agreed to hold close consultations to enhance cooperation in the nuclear energy sectors agreed upon at the summit, including cooperation in overseas nuclear power markets, small modular reactors (SMR), stable supply of nuclear fuel, and spent nuclear fuel management.
