'4-Minute Miracle' CPR Training... Nowon-gu Fully Resumes from June
Two Daily Weekday Sessions and Additional Twice-Monthly Weekend Classes for Office Workers... CPR, AED Use, and Airway Obstruction Treatment Lectures at District Office 1st Floor Training Room
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Nowon-gu (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) will fully resume regular cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training starting in June, operating a total of three classes: weekday morning and afternoon sessions, and a weekend session.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's survey on sudden cardiac arrest, the number of sudden cardiac arrest patients in South Korea was recorded at 61 per 100,000 people in 2020 (44 per 100,000 in Nowon-gu), showing a steady increase, making education to respond to emergency situations urgently needed.
Accordingly, the district reopened the permanent training center, which had been closed since February 2020 to prevent and respond to the spread of COVID-19, and resumed CPR training for general residents, legally mandated education targets, institutions, and organizations.
The training is divided into ▲weekday classes (10 a.m. and 2 p.m.) and ▲weekend classes (Saturday at 10 a.m.). The weekend class was newly added from June to accommodate workers and students who find it difficult to attend on weekdays, and is held 2 to 3 times per month.
Classes take place for about 1 hour and 30 minutes at the permanent training center located on the first floor of the district office annex. Up to 23 people per session can receive training on CPR, the use of automated external defibrillators (AED), and treatment methods for airway obstruction.
Anyone, whether individuals or groups, can enroll. Those wishing to attend must make a reservation in advance by phone or through the Nowon-gu Public Health Center website and visit the training center at the designated time.

The rate of CPR implementation by the general public in Nowon-gu has steadily increased from 10.1% in 2015 to 29% in 2020. This is analyzed to be the effect of establishing the nation’s first permanent CPR training center at the district office in 2012, providing training to more than 30,000 people annually.
In addition, the district has installed the largest number of 921 automated external defibrillators indoors and outdoors among Seoul’s autonomous districts and continues to conduct related campaigns, promoting various projects to protect the lives and health of residents in case of emergency situations.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “If rapid treatment is administered within 4 minutes after cardiac arrest occurs, the patient’s survival rate can increase nearly fourfold,” and added, “We ask for your great interest and participation in CPR training to protect the lives of your family and neighbors.”
