Honorary Chairman Choi Wi-seung, Founder of Gyeongnam Local Liquor Company 'Muhak', Passes Away
[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] Choi Wi-seung, Honorary Chairman of Muhak, passed away on the 2nd at the age of 90.
Born in Goseong, Gyeongnam, Honorary Chairman Choi is the founder of Muhak, a local liquor company in Gyeongnam famous for the soju brand "Joeun Day." He founded Muhak in Masan in 1965 and managed the company for over 30 years from 1973 to 2008. Since 2008, he served as the honorary chairman of Muhak until recently.
Chairman Choi held various positions including the 10th to 12th president of the Masan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (1979?1988), chairman of the Korean Red Cross Gyeongnam Chapter (1989?1995), vice chairman of the Gyeongnam Provincial Committee of the National Unification Advisory Council (1995?1998), and chairman of the Gyeongnam Regional Development Council (1998?2020).
The late chairman acquired a liquor manufacturing company producing soju and cheongju since 1929 in 1965, changed the company name to Muhak Brewing in 1973, and established it as a corporation. In 1994, his second son, Choi Jae-ho, the current chairman, took office as CEO, leading the company to become a comprehensive liquor enterprise. Their main products include soju Joeun Day, Cheongchun Soju, White, and Maesil Maeul, among other liquors.
In 1985, he established the Muhak Scholarship Foundation, and the Muhak Group currently operates the "Joeun Day Sharing Foundation."

Survived by his family members Choi Jung-woo, Jae-ho (Chairman of Muhak Group), Dong-ho (Vice Chairman of MH Ethanol), Jeong-ho (Vice Chairman of Yongwon Country Club), and Han-gyeom. The funeral will be held as a company funeral, with the funeral hall set up at SMG Yonsei Hospital (Masan). The funeral procession will take place at 8 a.m. on the 5th, and the burial site will be at the family graveyard in Daegam-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gyeongnam.
