Korea GM Sold 15,700 Units Last Month... 4.4% Decrease YoY Due to Semiconductor Shortage
Domestic demand decreases by 39.8%... Exports increase by 9.3%
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Korea GM announced on the 2nd that its sales last month were 15,700 units, down 4.4% compared to the same month a year ago.
Exports reached 12,932 units, up 9.3% from May last year, but domestic sales were 2,768 units, down 39.8%. Compared to April, total sales including exports and domestic sales decreased by 20.6%.
The two models, Chevrolet Trailblazer and its sibling model Buick Encore GX, led the performance with 6,471 units shipped, marking the second consecutive month of export growth. Spark and Malibu were exported at 2,792 and 597 units respectively, increasing by 143.8% and 675.3% compared to the same month last year.
In the domestic market, the main models Chevrolet Spark and Trailblazer sold 1,247 and 876 units respectively, down 24.3% and 34.5% compared to the same month last year. Chevrolet Colorado sold 320 units, an increase of 400.0%.

Carlos Minert, Vice President of Sales, Service, and Marketing at Korea GM, said, "There are difficulties due to production disruptions caused by the shortage of vehicle semiconductors," adding, "Domestic and international customers have shown strong interest in the new products launched this year." He continued, "The launch of the Equinox is also scheduled for June," and added, "We will further expand our product portfolio along with a strengthened SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) lineup."
