Say "Yeollin Shumteo" Instead of "Open Space"
Recommendation of "Ilsang Hoebok Buran" as a Korean Alternative to "Endemic Blue"
"Yeollin Shumteo" Proposed to Replace "Open Space"
Government and Language Experts Aim to Promote Easier Korean Expressions
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on June 2 that the term "open space" be replaced with the Korean expression "yeollin shumteo" (meaning "open rest area"). They also suggested "ilsang hoebok buran" (meaning "anxiety over returning to normal life") as a Korean alternative to "endemic blue."
In urban planning, an open space refers to an area designed to provide people with opportunities for recreational activities or to offer a sense of relaxation. The Ministry and the Institute decided to adopt "yeollin shumteo" as the replacement term after reviewing its appropriateness and usability at a neologism committee meeting held on May 18. The selection also reflected the results of a public survey. In a survey conducted from May 20 to 26 with about 2,000 participants, 93.1% of respondents found the new term appropriate. Additionally, 74.8% agreed on the need to replace foreign words with Korean alternatives. "Endemic blue" refers to feelings of depression that arise from the rapid changes in daily life following the easing of social distancing measures. "Ilsang hoebok buran" was chosen as the appropriate Korean term.

The neologism committee is a group that provides easy-to-understand Korean alternatives for difficult foreign neologisms before they become widespread. Experts from various fields, including Korean language, foreign languages, education, public relations and publishing, information and communications, and media, participate in the committee. The Ministry and the Institute plan to continue promoting the use of these alternative terms, encouraging government agencies and media outlets to take the lead in their adoption.
