[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Yoo Jeong-bok, the elected mayor of Incheon from the People Power Party, emphasized on the 2nd, "This victory is not just mine but the victory of the great citizens who wished for the happiness of the people and the development of Incheon," adding, "I will create a world-class city where citizens are happy, Incheon."
Yoo made these remarks after winning the June 1 Incheon mayoral election in a rematch against Park Nam-chun, the candidate from the Democratic Party of Korea.
With this mayoral election victory, he earned the honor of the 'Double Triple Crown,' a title given to those who have served more than twice as metropolitan government heads, ministers, and members of the National Assembly.
Yoo stated, "For me, citizens are all 3 million people of Incheon, regardless of party affiliation or support," and said, "I will carry out city administration by honoring the will and hearts of Incheon citizens."
He emphasized, "As promised to the citizens, I will promote regional balanced development measures including revitalization of the old downtown area such as the 'Jemulpo Renaissance' to make Incheon a premium city," adding, "I will also develop 'New Hong Kong City' to advance Incheon into a global city."
Yoo plans to focus on implementing two balanced development plans during the 8th popularly elected term: 'inter-class co-prosperity' that considers the disabled, self-employed, and small business owners, and 'inter-generational co-prosperity' that provides dreams and jobs for youth and ensures healthy and joyful old age for seniors.
He also presented a vision to foster future industries such as bio, automobile, robotics, aviation, hydrogen, IT, logistics, and tourism intensively to elevate Incheon as South Korea's second economic city.
Additionally, plans include early opening of the Incheon-origin KTX, establishment of new railway networks such as GTX-B, GTX-D Y-line, GTX-E, and the circular Incheon Line 3, as well as construction of expressways from Seochang to Gimpo and from Gyeyang to Ganghwa. The Gyeongin Expressway and Gyeongin Railway will be undergrounded, and a tram from Bupyeong to Yeonan Port will be built to establish a comprehensive transportation network.
To revitalize jobs and the local economy, he also promised substantial compensation for small business owners and SMEs hit hard by COVID-19.
