Last Year, South Korea Ranked First Worldwide in Standard Patent Share
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Last year, South Korea's share of standard patents achieved the world's number one position.
The Presidential National Intellectual Property Committee (NIPC) held its 32nd meeting on the 31st at the Seoul Government Complex annex, where it reviewed and approved a total of three agenda items, including the "Second National Intellectual Property Basic Plan (2017?2021) Implementation Performance Review."
The National Intellectual Property Basic Plan is the highest comprehensive plan in the intellectual property (IP) field under the Intellectual Property Basic Act, established and reviewed every five years.
At the meeting, the NIPC selected 20 outstanding projects from the achievements of the "Second Basic Plan (2017?2021)."
Previously, the NIPC formed a policy review team mainly composed of private experts to evaluate the progress of 47 projects led by central government ministries and local governments over the past five years.
As a result, South Korea's global standard patent share reached 22.8% last year, securing the world's number one position. The United States and Finland ranked second and third, respectively.
This exceeded the original 2021 target of 10%. In 2017, South Korea's share was 5.6%, ranking fifth worldwide.
Additionally, in international patent (PCT) applications, South Korea ranked fourth globally with 21,000 applications, following China (69,000), the United States (59,000), and Japan (51,000).
