Gyeonggi-do to Conduct 'Natural Resource Survey' of Namhansanseong World Heritage Site by May Next Year
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province will conduct a natural resource survey by May next year to systematically preserve and manage Namhansanseong Provincial Park, which houses a World Cultural Heritage site.
The Gyeonggi Namhansanseong World Heritage Center held a kickoff meeting for the "Namhansanseong Provincial Park Natural Resource Survey Service" on the 25th in the center's main conference room.
This service is conducted every five years in accordance with the Natural Parks Act and covers the entire area of Namhansanseong Provincial Park (35.16㎢). It surveys natural environment fields such as fauna and flora, geomorphology and geology, plant communities, and birds, as well as human environment fields including historical and cultural resources, visitation patterns, and hazard zones.
Spanning three regions?Gwangju, Seongnam, and Hanam?Namhansanseong Provincial Park was designated as a provincial park in March 1971.
It is home to Namhansanseong, a World Cultural Heritage site and fortress built during the Joseon Dynasty. According to the 2017 natural resource survey, seven endangered wild species such as Baekbuja and Saehorigi, 32 Korean endemic species including the Korean white birch, and six natural monuments such as the Eurasian kestrel and common kestrel were found to inhabit the area.
The province plans to use the survey results as basic data for park management plans, including park plan revisions and park project implementations, as well as for establishing systematic conservation and management plans for the natural ecosystem.
