Justice Party Appeals for Support to "Protect the Seeds of Progressive Politics in Gwangju"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Justice Party appealed to the public two days before the early voting for the June 1 local elections, apologizing and asking to "protect the seeds of progressive politics in Gwangju."
On the morning of the 25th, the Justice Party held a banner at the May 18 Democratic Square that read, "We were lacking. Please give the Justice Party another chance," and apologized to the citizens.
Assemblywoman Kang Eun-mi said, "So far, the Justice Party has not become an alternative in Gwangju politics. It is all because the Justice Party was lacking," adding, "However, I and the Justice Party will not give up here. We will set the Justice Party straight and stir the winds of Justice Party innovation starting from Gwangju," bowing her head.
She continued, "Please give our Justice Party candidates, who are struggling to sprout the buds of an alternative opposition party in Gwangju despite difficult conditions, the opportunity to work hard on the side of the citizens," and appealed, "We will do proper politics for the vulnerable and invisible transparent people in our society."
Assemblywoman Kang and all Justice Party candidates running in the Gwangju local elections performed 108 prostrations to the citizens of Gwangju as a sign of apology and repentance. They plan to continue with 3,000 prostrations during the remaining election period.
Earlier, in the final TV debate held the previous day, Justice Party candidate for Gwangju mayor Jang Yeon-ju said, "The Justice Party has been very lacking and has disappointed many. We will reflect more and show you a proper way of working," and appealed, "The Justice Party has worked hard to represent citizens who are not represented by the Democratic Party politics in the Gwangju City Council, which has been dominated by the Democratic Party. Please give the Justice Party city councilors a chance to work."
She also emphasized, "I introduced a local coexistence card and a public delivery app to revive the local economy," and added, "I created the Industrial Safety and Health Ordinance to protect the lives and health of workers in blind spots so that powerless workers do not die while working, and raised the child independence support fund for children leaving the severely insufficient child care facilities to 10 million won."
She further stated, "We increased support funds for single mothers and established an ordinance for universal support of menstrual products for female adolescents, budgeting and implementing it since last year."
She then requested, "If citizens are thinking of giving one vote between the Justice Party mayoral candidate and party vote, please vote for the party," and asked, "Please create a Gwangju City Council with Justice Party proportional representatives and Justice Party city councilors."

Meanwhile, the Justice Party has produced proportional representative city councilors in all elections in Gwangju except for four local elections since 2002. Candidates Yoon Nan-sil (2002) and Jeon Ju-yeon (2010) from the Democratic Labor Party, Lee Mi-ok (2014) from the Unified Progressive Party, and Jang Yeon-ju (2018) from the Justice Party were successively elected as proportional representative city councilors. In 2006, the Democratic Party and Uri Party separately nominated candidates and failed to produce elected representatives.
