View original image[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Attention is focused on whether the Gwangju Metropolitan City Superintendent of Education election scheduled for June 1 will be reshaped due to unification.
Although unification has been consistently raised before, it has recently surged to the surface as one candidate proposed unification and another candidate mentioned welcomed the idea. However, among the candidates mentioned, another candidate’s side remains cautious, and the education community explains that it is still too early to judge whether unification will be achieved.
Kang Dongwan, candidate for Gwangju Superintendent of Education, proposed a "three-party unification for recommending a citizen candidate" to candidates Park Hyeja and Jeong Seonghong on the 23rd.
Kang said, "The Gwangju Superintendent of Education election is becoming dichotomized into democratic or non-democratic, progressive or conservative," adding, "At this moment when five candidates are competing, each has different starting points and different backgrounds, so they cannot concentrate citizens' support and are facing reality."
He continued, "I propose unification as one way to recommend one citizen candidate, secure leadership for the superintendent of education that can revive the spirit of Gwangju with majority support, and complete future education."
As a method of unification, he suggested deciding through a credible survey-type public opinion poll and announcing the final decision by the 26th, or if there is another official survey method agreed upon by the three parties, to choose that.
Candidate Park Hyeja responded first to this unification proposal.
Park said, "On the 13th, I proposed unification to candidates Kang Dongwan and Jeong Seonghong, saying that the 'democratic reform forces' should unite to create a bright future for Gwangju education," and added, "I thank candidate Kang Dongwan for making a decision and urge joining the unification line together for the proud advancement of Gwangju education."
However, candidate Jeong Seonghong’s side remains cautious.
A representative of Jeong’s side said, "We do not yet know the detailed contents of Kang Dongwan’s unification proposal," and added, "We have not received any information from Kang’s side before or after the interview proposing it, so we are currently verifying the details."
Jeong previously became a candidate through unification with Kim Seonho, a prospective candidate, under the Gwangju Democratic Progressive Superintendent of Education Unification Promotion Committee.
Therefore, it is analyzed that at this point, Jeong’s side has no choice but to be cautious about unification with other candidates.
