International Committee of the Red Cross "Registration of Azovstal Surrendered Soldiers as Prisoners of War Begins"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced on the 19th (local time) that it has begun the registration process for hundreds of prisoners of war who surrendered at the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, Ukraine.
In a statement released that day, the ICRC stated that it started the registration process for soldiers and wounded who left the Azovstal steel plant from the 17th. The procedure is ongoing.
The registration process requires personal information such as name, date of birth, and close relatives, and the ICRC explained that this information will help track the movements of captured soldiers and maintain contact.
This procedure is based on the Geneva Conventions established in 1949 to protect prisoners of war.
